Linux drive format

I have a server in which I am going to install Linux from scratch. My question is I recently had a drive failure and tried to do a recovery on it but it appears ext3 was very hard if impossible to recover from because of how the journal works? I read that ext2 is easy to recover, so would it hurt to install something like Fedora Core 4 and use ext2? Would it affect anything? Would it hurt performance? Would certain apps not be able to install?

Thanks
Silly
