Help with Configuring CMS Domains

Here's hoping someone can guide me to possible solutions. Help with Configuring CMS Domains

We have a CMS that creates different websites within an domain called groups. What we want is that each group should have a URL like, group1.domain.com, group2.domain.com, group3.domain.com, etc. The groups are defined in a DB and share files which resides in the webroot, one db, etc. Using the DNS manager that points to a directory will not work, unless there is a redirect but not sure if this is even a solution...since the question would be to where?

What is the best solution to configure the groups etc. so that when users type in group1.domain.com, they are directed to group1 home page, group2 to group2 home page and not to the home page of domain.com. Hopefully when they arrive at their home page, they will be able to navigate throughout their pages in the group.

The CMS resides on a VPS and we have access to httpd.

I am hoping the host providers may have a solution for this. Please help.
