Fiber Cross-connect, gig converter problems

This week we tried to move from a 100Mbps multi-mode fiber media converter to a gigabit device. We could not estable traffic after several hours of trying, although we had good link indicators all around.

Previously we had a 100Mbps converter on both ends, our side connected via cat-5e to our firewall, the other end our provider plugged into their switch. The fiber port on our provider's switch is strictly 1000/full.

With the new gigabit converter, we used cat 5e on our end into the firewall, and on the other end the fiber went straight into the switch.

We established links on both ends - on the converter, and on our providers switch, and a green link between the converter ethernet port and the firewall.

Our provider said we were on the same VLAN, and the same switch when they made the change, so no routing/caching issues should be happening.

I tried swapping each of the fiber lines, which killed the link. I tried various cables from the converter to the firewall (several of both cross-over and non-crossover). We tried various settings on the firewall, auto/auto, 1000/auto, auto/full, etc. None of them could get the traffic through.

I gave it 10-15 minutes after we established a link, with no luck.

Anyone run into this issue before? I'm not sure if I should be returning the converter for a new one, or blaming our provider for not doing something right on their end...

TYVM.
