How do I move my server?
I have a DNS question. I run a small web hosting company. Just a single server. Both my primary and secondary DNS are on it, and web server, sql server, mail, etc.I'm told I have to move. From one IP segment (say 69.2.2.1 thru 69.2.2.10) to another (say 204.3.3.1 thru 204.3.3.10) for whatever reason (bandwidth costs are to high for my datacenter). ns1.myhostingcompany.com = 69.2.2.1 and ns2.myhostingcompany.com = 69.2.2.2. So all my customer's domains have they're primary and secondary DNS set to those obviously. This is a very typical setup.
Whats involved in minimizing downtime for the move? So I reset my IP's for eth0 (i'm running Linux and bind 9) to the 204.x.x.x addresses. Then ns1.myhostingcompany.com is now 204.3.3.1 and ns2.myhostingcompany.com is now 204.3.3.2. This is all fine, the server would now run in 204.x.x.x.
The problem I'm having difficulty grasping is how do all my customer's domains know how to get to the server now? They're all still going to 69.2.2.1 for lookups, but thats not answering anymore because ns1.myhostingcompany.com and ns2.myhostingcompany.com have changed IP. These registrars don't know nsX.myhostingcompany.com IP's have changed so they keep reporting the old ones.
Does a move like this involve going to every single domain's registar (eg. godaddy, network solutions, etc.) and entering the new IP's 204.3.3.1 and 204.3.3.2 for the primary and secondary name servers?
I'm just want to know what I'm missing before I do this.
Thanks.
