setting up webmail service

hi ive been useing linux/bsd as a desktop machine for a while now and i can also program in php an mysql

I was thinkin about making a email service which users could sigin up to on a webpage and get there own email an read the emails on somthin like Horde or SquirrelMail page

what ive been confused by is im guessing the webpage would have to add a unix user to the system ? and how can you add the user from a webpage?

could any one tell me other stuff i would need to know ?
