Fastest/Best Web Server for Images?

What's the fastest and/or best web server for loading images? I currently use thttpd for one site/machine, and want to switch another site/machine over from Apache 1.3x to a separate image web server as well as Apache 1.3x for dynamic php pages.

I tried lighttpd and that is easy to configure. Would lighttpd be faster than thttpd? Any other solutions I should consider? Thanks.
