Kernel panic after upgrade

I have CentOS 4 running on my server with kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL and 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp.Due to heavy load on my server, I followed instruction from this forum to compile the new kernel ( higher kernel).So I compile "successfully" new kernel version 2.6.15.4 and when I boot my system using the compiled kernel I have the following errors:
insmod: error inserting 'lib/sata_via.ko' : -1 Unknown symbol in module
ERROR:/bin/insmod exited abnormally
kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!
