can't empty recycle bin

have a windows 2003 std dedicated server. recently i checked out the properties page for my C: drive and it showed that i was using 70gb out of 78gb. i knew this couldn't be true, and i actively scanned each main directory and found that totaled up i couldn't be using more than 10gb.

then i went to empty my recycle bin, it emptied some stuff but then gave error "cannot remove folder SYSTEM: directory not empty". now it just keeps giving that message. bogus.

well i did some searching on the internet and people seem to think that this means there is either corruption on the harddrive or in the filesystem, and the main fix is to run chkdsk. so i rented a remote kvm (24 hours for $30) and ran chkdsk, but it found/fixed nothing...

i also ran a free online virus scan but it didn't find anything of note.

so i'm here with only a few hours left on my kvm rental wondering what else i should try. any ideas?
