Shoud my Host Limit me to 10mbps instead of 100mbps

I have a dedicated server with Ipower. My NIC supports 10/100 mbps and full duplex. However it defaults to 10mbps and half duplex.

When I try to change the configuration to 100mbps the server goes down. Support tells me the following...

Dear Customer,

We are currently offering a 10MB link. I have no problems setting your nic to 10MB FD using mii-tool. I have tested setting to 100 but when you force a change the nic stops advertising the other modes. I will put the proper configuration lines in to support a 10 MB FD link. Is this acceptable to you?

My question is should I expect to be able to get a 100mbps link or is it "standard" that it is limited to 10? Do other people's hosts offer 100mbps?

The reason this came up is b/ at high traffic times my site slows down. I've done linux/apache/mysql/php optimization but this is the only outstanding issue.

Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
