questions regarding free hosting service...
1) First of all, which dedicated server provider allowes servers for this purpose? This is very important, since free servers are often using most of their allocated space and traffic, this can be a problem with oversellers and such - if you know any reliable provider that can help with a server that would be nice! Managed is plus but not a requirement, I can hire someone from time to time to do audits, but provider should setup and secure my server in the beginning - this is important.
2) What software? linux/win? Redhat/Fedora? I'll probably be disabling all the advanced features SSL, SSH, Cron, cURL etc - so I need to know which server which version of kernel maybe is optimal for this purpose.
We'll enable only: Ftp, mysql/php, email.
3) I don't want to use cpanel for the freehost, first of all it's not intended for managing 1000 users. Cpanel isn't optimized for handling large number of users on one server, for example I had problem deleting 100 users at the same time... it causes cpanel to freeze. So what should I use? Which soft is good for freehost?
4) I'll need some certain software to manage "free orders" - with verify/process features - to help avoid duplicate sign-ups by one person, als it would be good for controling number of users etc. It would be nice if software had some special customer area, were users could manage free host features. For example mysql/email/file manager features...
(subdomain creation for every user)
5) I know users from china are a big pain for free servers, they are vast! and they sign up in packs, like 1000 in one day etc. I would want to have means to disable that part of world, I know it sounds realy bad - but I had bad experience with them last year...
6) What are legal issues with free host, is there anything I should be aware of?
7) How can I detect spammers on my server?
8) How do I check for illegal materials such as mp3, how do I disable it at all? so that users cannot upload it?
9) How can I track down files that are not linked from the html website?
This are issues I'm interested in, I would appreciate if you could share your knowledge and ideas - we can also transform this topic into a FAQ for the free servers
