who,top not showing users?

Weird problem, searched google but to no avail maybe some uber pro will know here?

ok, the who command, and top doesn't show the correct users that are logged on. Top just shows 0 users. The who cmd doesn't give anything...

root@host [~]# who
root@host [~]#

top - 08:58:43 up 1 day, 10:34, 0 users, load average: 0.32, 0.24, 0.27

Any ideas?
