Setting up mail server with external mx

Im trying to setup a mail server but never had this type of setup.

The mx record is being hosted by another server that points to this server I installed qmail on. Do I need to still setup dns on this qmail server? The server with qmail has qmail with vpopmail, its Fedora Core 3.

I tried just pointing to the server that is hosting the mx record to send mail out, but it hangs for awhile and then it gives me this error:

"553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)"

Am I missing something?
