I just installed PuTTY and trying to connect to a Fedora Core 4 SSH-2 (default server). I see the login screen, but no matter what I enter, the window closes without any warning, and PuTTY exits. (You would think the PuTTY people could provide a bit more info as to the problem?)
I have not exchanged SSH-2 keys, because I am lead to believe by PuTTY documentation that one can still login without keys (but with less security).
