troubles & woes ./configure'ing php5

configure: error: wrong mysql library version or lib not found. Check config.log for more information.

BUT

they are there, and pointed correctly!

./configure --with-openssl --with-kerberos --enable-bcmath --enable-calendar --with-curl --enable-exif --enable-ftp --with-gd --enable-native-ttf --with-gettext --with-mcrypt --with-mhash --with-mysqli=/usr/local/bin/mysql_config --enable-mbstring --with-pspell --enable-sockets --with-regex=php --with-tidy --with-xsl --with-zlib-dir=/usr/include --with-snmp --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs

any idea what could be wrong? :'( this is giving me so much grief!
