Devices on connected switches - an issue?

I've connected two cabinets via fiber, gig transceivers, and gig switches in each. The switches are both managed Dell Powerconnects, 52xx and 53xx series.

Our net connection comes to the first cab.

Our san storage is also in the first cab, most of the web servers are in the second.

We're only outputting around 70Mbps peak, which means theoretically the crossconnect between the two cabs should be only seeing 140-150 Mbps total traffic (on a 1 gig fiber connect). I wouldn't think this would stress a gig fiber connection (but I could be wrong).

I'm seeing some strange performance issues - lots of dropped pings, slow file transfer, etc from web servers in the second cabinet to file servers on the first.

Anyone else run into issues with devices connected to two separate switches which are essentially chained together? Suggestions?
