linux kernel updates

I'd like to get the general opinion on linux kernel updates. I've recently been told that I was careless because I didn't ran the latest kernel around the block.

I believe that this is completly false as new kernel often offer support for new hardware, new feature and add the possibility of new bug.

If there's any security vulnerabilities, most of the time, you can easily counter them with loadable module or grsecurity/pax solutions...

Discuss: Is running the latest kernel mandatory for security or just increase your chance of downtime.
